Nice anchor leg for Piper Donaghu. Had her around 57.8, and Ella Donaghu around 60 flat.
watchout
couple girls go under 2:20 in Heat 2 of the girls 800m.

The fast heat (Alexa Efraimson, Piper Donaghu, Tess Michaelson, Paige Rice, Hannah Derby, etc.) up next! Maybe a new US#1 on the way?

EDIT: Nope, not US#1. 2:09.36 for Efraimson.
watchout
AND add a US#3 in the Boys Hammer Throw for Max Lydum (Central OR)
watchout
Ella Donaghu (Grant OR) scored the meets second US#1 mark with her 4:31.37 win in the 1500m. Lauren Perry (Richland WA) was also US#5 in the race in 4:33.70.

In the boys 1500m, runner-up Elijah Armstrong (Pocatello ID) moved up to #6 in the nation in 3:55.35. Matthew Maton won with a new the meet record, but didn't set a new PR.

US Top-10 tally so far:

US#1's: 2
US#2's: 2
US#5's: 1
US#6's: 1
US#10's: 1

The top event (Girls 800m) still 70 minutes away.

Also, more stats -

Boys WA#1 marks: 5 (well, 6 are listed, but Nathan Hale ran a faster DMR at Pasco today)
Girls WA#1 marks: 3

Boys OR#1 marks: 6
Girls OR#1 marks: 5

Boys ID#1 marks: 1
Girls ID#1 marks: 2
watchout
Shoutout to Nathan Richards, a former DyeStat poster and R.A. Long grad (rival school in my hometown) who is running in the 10k.

EDIT: He won the 10k. Nice job!
watchout
Nice anchor by Roseburg FTW! Winning time was 10:29.91

Apparently 4:19 anchor for Bloom (think they finished third, but they got DQ'd for unsportsmanlike conduct)
watchout
3:10.1 to open for Eastlake
then a 51.1 for the 400m leg

Lincoln caught up on the first lap of the 800m leg

about a 61? on the first lap of the 800m leg for Eastlake

6:01.6 on the handoff for Lincoln, but they cut away before I saw Eastlake cross (I'm guessing around 6:02, he wasn't far behind)

63 on the opening lap for Lincoln's anchor, but settled into ~70s pace on lap 2
watchout
Boys on the line now.

I don't expect this one to be nearly as stacked... Gig's top trio having just finished the 3k only 20 minutes ago.
watchout
Great anchor legs.

4:44.6 and 4:55.6 for their 1600's, according to the announcer.

11:54.19 Camas (US#1)!
11:54.74 Grant (US#2)!
watchout
10:30 at 500m to go... both look like they are going well under 12 today

3:36 and 3:47 through 1200m

I slept on it and came up with a better solution to the relay problem... Just take one qualifier from each league instead of two, and fill out the other lanes with a wildcard system like already exists in 6A. There's also already a precedent for handling relays differently than other events, with the auto-qualifiers being based on a different formula.

4A would get one extra qualifier based on fastest District Meet time, 5A would get three, and 6A would get two.

I've always hated the 3-turn stagger of the 4x400. It yields totally non-competitive lead-off legs in nearly every race. I know it would be tougher to manage the first exchange without it, but that's part of what makes the relay exciting! I would love to see it tried with a 1-turn stagger (800m cut-in on the first leg) or a waterfall start. The latter would solve the 2-heat final problem and make for a doubly entertaining race. But, it doesn't fit with the rule books, so it's probably too much to wish for.

They probably just need to bite the bullet and make the day session of day 2 longer with relay prelims. Perhaps give thought to moving the 3k to day 3 (day 2 for big schools) with the rest of the running event finals, following a traditional 1-day meet format. That would keep the days more in balance.

I gotta say agree with Dan about the two section finals in the relays.
I understand that it's an experiment and with this new three-day, six class format there probably isn't time for prelims in those events.

But the meet shouldn't drag on like that, especially what happened on Friday night at the end of the small-schools meet. A first section of four teams and a second section of five or six ... was ridiculous. The teams were so far spaced out that even the threadbare promise of competition was lost. And it was cold. And too long.

My two cents.

Fair point. It's been a while since Oregon girls have put up 3k times comparable to the low ten minute 2-miles of the elites. I need to get with the times. :)

Love seeing those top marks for Oregonians! Although, the 3k and Javelin always deserve asterisks (IMO) due to how few states have those events.

Dan

True, but any time approaching 9:30 in the girls 3k is going to be US Top-10/15 when you combine the 3k-2mile events. And it helps when meets like Arcadia and NBON get 3k splits en route to their longer distances.

Best athlete of Saturday's session is probably Venessa D'Arpino, with this triple: 12.04 for a meet record in the 100, 24.11 for a meet record in the 200 and 54.68 for a meet record in the 400.

Her sister Kerisaa was right behind her.

Venessa is now No. 12 all-time (all classes) in the 100, No. 4 in the 200 and No. 5 in the 400.

And the twins are both juniors. Wow.

I'm on board with that! Thoroughly dominating performance, made all the more impressive by having some historically strong competition to beat out. And add in some great 4x400 running in what will be an overlooked performance due to the dropped baton.

That concludes the meet ... thanks for following along! Team trophy presentations and athlete of the meet (high point scorers) for each classification to follow, but that info will presumably be posted along with the results by the time it's known here. :)
